Change - get comfortable with it!

What is change?

Change is an inevitable part of life that can often leave us feeling uncertain and overwhelmed. Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is an essential skill to have.

If we shy away from discomfort, we may miss out on exciting opportunities or get stuck in old habits. Everything around us is constantly changing – business, our bodies, environments, people, expectations, and so the list goes on. By avoiding tough issues, we may choose not to take risks or have difficult conversations, both at work and at home.

To fully live and embrace change, we must be willing to step into the unknown. It’s important to accept that uncertainty is a reality, and it’s okay to feel uncomfortable.

You have to build the confidence and personal power to navigate through challenging and changing times. Instead of shying away from discomfort, embrace it, learn about how you respond. Take a moment to reflect on why you feel uncomfortable and try to reframe it as a positive source of growth. Change is inevitable, but by facing it together, we can make it our friend and grow from it.

Whether it’s a big life change like moving to a new city or a small change like trying a new hobby, it can take time to adjust and feel comfortable with the new situation.

Here are some tips on how to cope with change:

  • Accept that change is a natural part of life – change is constant, and resisting it will only lead to unnecessary stress. By accepting change as a natural part of life, we can shift our mindset and focus on adapting to the new situation.
  • Take things one step at a time – it can be tempting to want to tackle everything at once (the elephant analogy) , but it’s important to break things down into smaller, manageable tasks. This will help you feel less overwhelmed and more in control.
  • Reach out for support – whether it’s a friend, family member, or professional, it’s important to have someone to talk to during times of change. They can provide perspective, advice, and emotional support.
  • Focus on the positive – it’s easy to get caught up in the negatives of a change, but it’s important to focus on the positives as well. This can help you feel more optimistic and motivated to adapt to the new situation. Remember the human mind errs on the side of negativity so we have to ensure we use our positive thinking too.
  • Be kind to yourself – change can be challenging, and it’s important to be patient with yourself during the process. Take time for self-care activities and give yourself permission to make mistakes, feel stressed or uncomfortable.

In summary

Coping with change requires a shift in mindset, breaking things down into manageable tasks, seeking support, focusing on the positive, and being a little less harsh on yourself.

By practicing these strategies, you can navigate through any change with greater ease and confidence and along the way you build more mental and emotional fitness! And we all need to be masters of these if we are to thrive in today’s world.
